I just purchased a new MacBook Pro. On my old MacBook Pro the hard drive icon sat on the desktop so I could open this and access my downloads, documents, etc. On my new MacBook Pro I cannot find how to open the hard drive to access these functions, it only provides a question about my startup disk.

What do yo mean by "it only provides a question about my startup disk."?
The startup disk, unless you made modification is your hard drive.
What happens when you open Finder? Default is tht te downloads folder and others appear in the left side.
If yo go to Finder>Preferences>General is the box checked that says show Hard Drives on desktop?
Question mark at Startup, in the center of the screen, possibly alternating with a folder Icon?
Question mark instead of a desired Icon in the Dock?
Question mark somewhere else I did not think of? Or perhaps a complex message? If so, please be as specific as you can.
