Macbook keyboard

Is a macbook's keyboard supposed to get brighter as the room brightness goes up? My mac just started doing this. The brightness of the keyboard goes down a little in the darkness and goes completely off in direct light. Is it supposed to get brighter as the room brightness goes up?
