connecting a repeater to an Airport Extreme

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and want to connect a NetGear N150 router to function as a repeater. Is this possible and if so, what are the setting changes I need to make on the Airport Extreme.

Apple have not updated the documents.. you cannot use the old utility on a new Mac or new Airport.

The principles of the old setup are the same though.

There is no setup required at all in the airport.. except perhaps wireless name that is short, no spaces and pure alphanumerics.. same with password but longer..

Plug in the netgear by ethernet..

Is it a router or WAP or ??

Netgear make many units and I need a model number to give exact details.

If the netgear has wap mode.. then this is easy.. put it in that mode.. and put in the same wireless name and password as the AE. You are done.

If the netgear does not have WAP mode.. this is a bit tricky.. you need to put the netgear in WAN Bypass.

Plan to keep the Ethernet cable permanently connected between the AirPort Extreme and Netgear products.

Reason......Apple uses proprietary settings to allow other Apple devices to communicate with each other using a wireless connection.....but it is extremely unlikely that these settings would be compatible or allow a Netgear product to connect wirelessly.....if that is really your goal here.

Ethernet cabling can be run 300+ feet or about 100 meters with virtually no signal loss, so if you are able to run the cable, the Netgear device can be located just about anywhere that you want....unless you have a very big home.

If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, you may want to take a look at Ethernet Over Powerline (EOP) adapters.....also sometimes known as HomePlug adapters......to run an Ethernet signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home. So, the theory with these adapters is that you already have the wiring in place, you just need the adapters. In practice, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest though, so you would want to have a clear understanding of the store's return policy before you buy.

Assuming that you are able to establish a permanent Ethernet connection between the AriPort Extreme and Netgear router, the real question here would be whether or not the Netgear device can be configured to operate as what is known as a Wireless Access Point often abbreviated and known as a WAP.

A quick look at the User Guide for the Netgear N150 does not reveal any information about whether or not this is possible with the product. So, if you want to pursue this further, you will need to ask this question on a Netgear Support forum. Actually, there are two questions that need to be asked.......

1) Whether or not is is even possible to configure the Netgear N150 as a Wireless Access Point, or WAP.

2) Whether or not Netgear, or another Netgear forum user will be able to provide configuration instructions for the Netgear product.

The bottom line here is that there are no settings or adjustments at all on an AirPort Extreme to allow the Netgear product to connect, so all of the information that you require will need to be provided by Netgear Support or a Netgear user.

If the roles were reversed, and the Netgear was already operating as your "main" router.......and you wanted to configure the AirPort Extreme to extend the Netgear network......then....it would make sense to ask your question on an Apple support forum, and we could provide the information that you need to do this.
