Q: My Apple watch will not log some exercise!

My Apple watch will not log Outdoor Cycling or Indoor Run as Exercise.  I get around it by choosing Other Exercise.  Boy is that dumb!

Is this by design or a flaw?  Two techs have asked me to reset my watch to fix the problem — of course to no avail.

Apple Watch, iOS 8.4.1

Rob, That is weird. I assume you are meeting some threshold of speed in each of these. Apparently, each exercise requires a minimum level of speed to count as 'exercise.' As an example, yesterday I road my bike and got 2 minutes less 'exercise' than 'workout' minutes. Apparently, for two minutes during the ride, I was not meeting the minimum criteria for biking 'exercise.

What G3gator said makes some sense. But, since i'm a slight Apple fanboy, I need to defend Apple: It SHOULD log your cycling. This is a glitch in watchOS, or what G3gator said. Iv'e only had the watch for a day, but it has logged my cycling.

Thank you both!  I don't believe there is any threshold involved.  If I set the exercise mode to "Outdoor Cycling", it logs nothing.  If I set it to "Other", it logs the exercise just fine.  While I don't like the fact that it apparently is an individual problem with my watch that isn't fixable with a hard reset, I'm glad it is working for others.  This information is useful in that I can press Apple a little more.

May I ask you both what models you have?  It will help me sort out whether it is a problem specific to my model or perhaps to my individual watch.  It might well be a hardware problem.  FYI, mine is a MJ3Y2LL/A, 42mm Stainless Steel Case with Milanese Loop.  I see a software upgrade is coming out this Wednesday, 9/16.  Perhaps that will help:

    Rob, I have a 42 stainless steel.

I am thinking you may have a hardware problem if you have rebooted and reset/re-paired.

My 'outdoor cycle' setting records exercise for almost all of my ride. I think it doesn't count the time spent standing at a traffic light as the exercise minutes are just few less than those shown for the workout.

THanks, George!  I believe the same thing.  It helps to see somebody agree.  It might help my conversations with Apple Support, too.

I have the same problem.  For example, I went out for a 15 mile ride today.  Took about 70 minutes with a 12 mph on a hybrid.  My watch counted me for 48 minutes (for some reason couldn't get GPS data even though phone was in my pocket) and 171 calories burnt.  I did 45 minutes of yoga later in the day logged as other and it gave me all 45 minutes and 157 calories.  Something seems not right.  I think it might also have gotten worse with the watch update.
