Mail stopped sending messages.

Equipment: iMac 27", Mid 2011; 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB Ram 1333 MHz DDR3. Internet/email provider: AT&T

Mail suddenly stopped sending messages. I am still receiving messages. So far I have:

  • Confirmed the outing (SMTP) settings are correct (port,"Use SSL" is checked)
  • Set up a new account in mail with the same email address
  • Deleted the SMTP server from the list and created a new one
  • Updated the OS to 10.10.5
  • Deleted password from Keychain

I am able to send messages from my iPhone.

I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Triple-click the word "telnet" in the line below on this page to select the whole line:

telnet smtp.mail.att.net 587

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

You should almost instantly get three or more lines of output below what you entered, one of which is this:

Escape character is '^]'.

If there's no output within ten seconds, consider that a failure. If you get something different from the above, please post it in a reply. You can then quit Terminal.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

After looking at the AT&T community forum I noticed other people had the same issue last night, but their email started working again after a few hours. This morning, mine had not. Decided to double check the settings on my iMac (which wasn't sending email) and my MPB which was able to send email. I found a small difference in the name of the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP).

  • My iMac (not working) had " smtp.mail.att.net / " as the server name.
NOTE: I COPIED & PASTED THIS FROM A LIST OF SETTINGS PROVIDED BY AT&T during my trouble-shooting of the account. In going back and looking at the table from which I copied the information now realize it was meant as a separator between the server name and the port number
  • My MBP (working) had " smtp.mail.att.net " as the server name.

After I removed the " / " from the server name I was able to send email again.

I still don't know why my email wouldn't send last night. It was a most likely combination of the "outage" other folks had last night and me mistakenly copying & pasting the " / " from the table on AT&Ts site. I did go back and left a comment suggesting the change the table so the server name and port # are in separate columns.

Linc - Thanks again for your help! :-)
