the keyboard won't type certain letters or causes skips, or initiates unwanted actions

My keyboard has started to not type certain letters, or certain keystrokes cause unwanted actions. Also, the drop down menus regularly disappear before the required item can be selected with the mouse. Both issues started happening at the same time, so suspect they are related somehow.
