Setting up iCloud on my devices

Question

I can access iCloud on the web, but it only shows my iPad and iPhone as connected.

I am having difficulty setting up iCloud on my Mac - when I select iCloud on the System Preferences window, it hangs for ages and doesn't respond.

How can I add my iMac to my iCloud files?

iMac (17-inch Late 2006), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I have 10.7.5 on my Mac, and can't update it any further without getting a new Mac!

I can now see iCloud details through System Preferences, but the iCloud web page still doesn't show the Mac as connected.
