Lost songs after trying to transfer to Mac

Hello

I hope you can help.

Having recently bought a Mac I tried to transfer my music via Home sharing from my old laptop. They didn't transfer and in the process more that 2700 songs are no longer accessible. They have a ! next to them with the message that they can no longer be located. They are mainly - but not all - songs that I uploaded from my old CD library (which I have now sold)

Spoke to Apple support this morning who directed me to the Apple Media folder - the missing were not in there - I already knew this.

I was told that it was nothing to do with Home Sharing but that I must have deleted the songs at some point - I would not have done this.

Obviously it is a lot of music to lose and I am almost resigned to the fact that they are gone for good. Has anybody had the same experience and should I be asking for compensation from Apple??

Thanks

Alison

Do you still have the working library on the original laptop?

Do you have any of this content on an Apple device?

There is no liability for your error on Apple's part, it is up to you to maintain your data and safely move it from one computer to another.

We'll gloss over the fact that you are not supposed to sell or give away your CDs while retaining copies of the tracks that you ripped from them. 😐

Hello

My concern is this happened whilst I was trying to transfer data using Home Sharing.

I do have a working library on my old Laptop - all the songs are listed on iTunes but the majority of them will not play as it says that the files cannot be found. There are some files that do work - and these are in iTunes media.

The only music I have on my Mac are the ones that were on my iPad and new ones that I have bought.

I am sure the majority of people have transferred their CD collection to iTunes or something similar and have then got rid of the CD's...........

Home Sharing isn't the way I would choose to move my library to a new computer. It can be used to copy some of the content, but even then only if the media is available to the source library. See Re: Migrating iTunes to a new PC for recommendations. Obviously you need to fix the original library first. Only you can know why some of the media isn't present, but typical reasons are adding media from removable drives but not making local copies, or moving things around by hand which breaks iTunes' connections to the files. If you can locate the missing media, or reconnect the drives where it is stored, then it should be possible to fix your library, then migrate it to your new computer. For more background see Re: Itunes can't find my musics. If that content has gone see iTunes Folder Watch and use its option to check for dead tracks on start up as a way to make your library reflect the content of your media folder.
