ipad air updates on each startup

I just got my new iPad air yesterday, and setup everything from iTunes. Now every time I start it it runs through two or three updates and the mail program tells me that the connection to the server failed, even though all of my emails have appeared. Any suggestions? Is the updating thing the new normal?

MacBook Pro, 10.9.5

If you have your new Air set up to do Auto Updates for Apps it is not unusual to have frequent App updates. The connection to the server failing is another issue, likely Network related. We can try diagnosing it but since it is brand new I would recommend going to the Apple Store again - they will test it and replace it if necessary. Good luck.
