Bluetooth on Apple Watch keeps searching although indidates connected on iphone plus not receiving notifications

I just noticed this morning that my Apple Watch stopped receiving notifications. I checked the Bluetooth connection and although it indicates connected on the iPhone it shows "searching" on the watch and will not connect. In addition, I turned off both devices, unpaired and repaired two times, the first time using backup and the second time I paired it as a new watch. Still nothing worked. I did a chat with the Apple rep and they were also unable to help. Anyone here able to help?

Greatly appreciated. Thank you.

When you go to Bluetooth via Settings on Apple Watch, you are instructing it to search for and pair with an additional device - eg a headset.

That is not how you check the connection with the iPhone from the watch. To do that, swipe up on the watch face, then swipe left or right to the Settings Glance, which will say either Connected or Disconnected.

I suspect your watch and iPhone are already connected (as already indicated on your iPhone) and that there is nothing to worry about.

Have you taken into account that Notifications behave differently depending on how your watch is configured?

For example, when you have Wrist Detection enabled (on your iPhone in the Apple Watch app: My Watch > General > Wrist Detection):

- If your iPhone is unlocked, you'll get notifications on your iPhone instead of on your Apple Watch.

- If your iPhone is locked or asleep - and your Apple Watch is unlocked and on your wrist - you'll get notifications on your Apple Watch instead.

That is up to you, but enabling Wrist Detection allows you to use features including:

  • Activate on Wrist Raise (instead of having to tap the screen to wake it from sleep).
  • Unlock your watch once when you put it on your wrist, then it stays unlocked until removed (when it will lock again automatically).
  • Apple Pay (both Wrist Detection and a Passcode are required to use this).

You might prefer to leave Wrist Detection enabled and also to turn on Passcode on your watch:

- In the Apple Watch app, go to: My Watch (bottom left hand tab) > General > Wrist Detection - on.

- My Watch > Passcode > Turn Passcode on (choose either a Simple 4-digit passcode or a longer one).

- Still within the Passcode settings screen, also enable Unlock with iPhone.

- After putting it on your wrist, your watch will then unlock after whatever you do first: either unlocking your watch manually or unlocking your iPhone.

No, the watch is not supposed to be listed there.

To check your Apple Watch notification settings, go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone:

My Watch > Notifications: check that the Notifications Indicator is turned on / enabled.

My Watch > Notifications > Messages: check the settings (eg set to Custom and then, under Alerts check that each of Show Alerts, Sound and Haptic are enabled).

My Watch > Notifications > Mail: check your settings.

You can also enable / disable watch-based notifications for many other apps from there.

Also, under My Watch > Sounds & Haptics: check the settings for Alert Volume and Haptic Strength (set to the middle or right).

Just an update since you spent so much time assisting me earlier today. The watch is back to normal and working as it should. My notifications have started to come in once again and are back to being saved which means the little red dot at the top of the screen has reappeared.

Apple should be sending you commission checks as I spent quite some time this morning in the online chat with one of their techs before coming to the forum. The best they could do was point me in the direction of going to an Apple store so again I sincerely appreciate your help.🙂
