Trouble deleting non Apple email account from accounts

I have a non Apple IMAP email account that I want to delete from my list of accounts in Apple Mail. When I select it in Mail > Preferences > Accounts and click on the "-" button I get this message: "The Mail account "randy@xxxxxxx.net" is shared using iCloud. You can remove this account from iCloud in Internet Accounts." But when I open Internet Accounts that email account is not in the list. How can I remove it from the Mail application? Thanks for any help with this. I'm stuck in a loop! 🙂

Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop Mail syncing. Then try to delete the account. If successful, you can try to resync Mail, but if your accounts are IMAP, you don't need to do so.

Thanks for the assistance Eric. I don't see an option for stopping Mail syncing. Is that just a matter of deselecting Mail from the list or would that be in the iDrive options?

I'm not familiar with iDrive, but it sounds like you have a setting in iDrive to sync to iCloud or your iCloud email account. You would need to remove sync in iDrive first.

Thanks for the suggestion. I turned of iCloud drive and mail but the "greyed out" email account still shows up in the Mail Accounts list and when I try to delete it it still says I have to delete it in iCloud, but the account is still not listed in the iCloud accounts when I turn them back on. Weird.

Did you turn off iCloud drive in iDrive or was this a typo and you really meant iCloud Drive?

If yes, try these steps

Quit Mail

Go to your User's Library folder**

Scroll down to Mail folder.

Inside the V2 > MailData folder, drag the Accounts.plist to the Desktop

Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar.

Log in and open Mail

I turned off iCloud Drive in iCloud. I tried your suggestion and after moving the Accounts.plist to the desktop all the email accounts were gone in the inbox. I manually re-added them and now the old email account is gone. Thanks.
