Archive Utility Error 32 - Broken pipe with .hqx file

Attempting to expand .hqx file, Archive Utility returns the message: “Unable to expand “your_file_name_here.hqx” into “your_directory_name_here”. (Error 32 - Broken pipe.)

Same .hqx file opens normally on another iMac running Mavericks.

Suggestions?

Thank you for the explanation. As you are probably aware, .hqx is a particularly poor choice for an image file.

If you search the Internet for a potential solution please be advised that it is littered with garbage products that not only may not work, they are far more likely to be malware-containing scams that will result in misery.

In particular, avoid Stuffit Expander, a product that was quite useful a couple of decades ago, only to suffer a precipitous decline in quality when its original developer Ray Lau sold it.

Here is one possible solution that will obviate those concerns: https://itunes.apple.com/app/the-unarchiver/id425424353

I have not tried it though, and don't happen to have any .hqx files to test. Please me know if it works for you.

Indeed it is an obsolete format. The source of the file is the Bibliotheque Nationale de France; hqx is the format they are using to deliver requested image files via email. I am actually pursuing this for a colleague, who, unlike me, only has a machine running Yosemite. I have been unarchiving these for her on one of my machines but being able to do it on her Yosemite desktop would be more efficient. I haven’t looked for a third-party application, maybe I should have done that before posting here.

Thank you! The Un Archiver does the job. Why the Bibliotheque Nationale de France still uses .hqx is anybody’s guess, probably averse to change - who knows, they may still be running beige boxes with OS 9. The kicker is, the .hqx file is 2 MB, while the expanded .jpg file is 626 KB! Anyway, thanks for steering me in the right direction and for doing it so quickly.
