Can I use my child's existing "Apple ID for students" for family sharing?

He has his own ID through school, so it would be much less confusing to just wrap it into the Family Sharing setup. However, he has purchases under that account... so while it might be possible, I'm not sure if it will wipe out his existing purchases. Thoughts?
