You can probably purchase an extended warranty and/or insurance through Verizon. Inquire when you purchase.
As a follow up to Meg's post, if you decide to buy a pre-owned iPhone from Verizon, you would be extremely wise to purchase whatever insurance or extended warranty they offer, since there is no way to tell what may have happened previously that may have voided the original warranty on that phone. If it was opened at any point in its life by someone other than Apple, you wouldn't even be able to get it serviced out of warranty by Apple should the need arise.
