Sometimes my phone rings and sometimes it doesn't. My text messages are sometimes silent too. I have checked the volume on the side of the phone and also the settings in "Settings, Notifications, Sounds and Alerts"; and the setting "Sounds."

Do you have "Do Not Disturb" enabled and "Allow Calls From" set to "Favorites" or some group of contacts?
Also check the Mute switch on the side of the device. Since you say it is intermittent, then it could be a malfunctioning Mute switch.
My "Do Not Disturb" was set to "Manual", so I switched it off. Hopefully that will take care of it. One more question though: "Silence" has two options, neither of which seems right. You have to check either "always" or "Only while iPhone is locked," and I don't want incoming calls and notifications to be silenced while iPhone is locked.
If you have set the Manual to "Off" the silence settings will be irrelevant.
