How do I down size the number of pixels in a photo? iMac iOS X Yosemite 10.10.5. Before this update I had the option to resize in an external editor, now I can't find that option

First crop the photo to the aspect ratio you want. Then export via the File ➙ Export X Photo... menu option

with the following settings:

This will resize the image to the same aspect ratio but with the width at what you set. If you want to change the file size choose a JPEG Quality other than Maximum.
