Talk to "written" text - iOS 8.4.1

Can you still use the "talk to written text" feature in iOS 8.4.1? I used this feature ALL OF THE TIME in messages and for internet typing/searches and it no longer functions as it did in the prior iOS version using the microphone on the keyboard. I do not want audio text messages - they do not offer privacy in public settings; especially when you prefer to read a text message rather than hold the phone to your ear - which happens in many situations. Using the Talk to "Written" text is much faster than typing, especially since my fingers have trouble hitting the right keys with the small keyboard on my iPhone 5. Can anyone help?

You are using the incorrect microphone. Use the circled one, not the "X"d one.

Speech to text hasn't changed any time recently. Unless you've turned it off, the mic should be to the left of the space bar.

If it's not, check the following:

Settings>Genera>Siri and make sure it's turned on.

Settings>General>Keyboard>Enable Dictation and make sure it's turned on.

Make sure you have an active data connection as it's also required for dictation to work.

Both my Siri and Enable Dictation are turned on, however I also am not hearing a voice or "bing" when I try to use Siri or the talk to text feature. Have I accidentally turned off something else?

The button you circled is the button I am trying to use. I noticed the wavy (dictation) line is almost straight. I also noticed that I am no longer hearing the introductory "beep" or Siri's voice anymore either. Have I accidentally turned off something else?

SSeveral of us have noticed this issue since the 8.4.1 update, but so far no one from Apple is acknowledging a problem. The only way to correct the issue is a hard reboot (hold Home button plus power button at same time). Even then, will only work for a few days.

Thanks so much - it worked and is still working! I had turned it completely off, but not with a hard reboot/home button. I guess when all else fails, turn it off and on again - I'm just relieved to have the feature working again - 🙂
