Quickest way to get total elapsed time of an audiobook on 7th gen?

The biggest problem with listening to audiobooks on the iPod Nano 7th generation is that you can only see the time elapsed/left for one chapter at a time. I've noticed that under some conditions the total elapsed time will be displayed (i.e. "Chapter 9 5:38"), rather than just Chapter 9 without the time. You'll get it for instance after you've had the unit plugged into iTunes. What is the quickest and simplest way to get to this display?
