All of a sudden a msg appeared on my computer saying it was from Mac support and that I had been infected with malware/adware. I was told to call a number (landline in Hawaii!) ASAP. There was even a recorded message saying the same thing.

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, close Safari, and then launch it with the Shift key held down. If the message reappears, disconnect the computer from the Internet for long enough to erase that site from the browser history.
