Q: Insight on LED studio displays and screen of death?
Help. I have a 27 inch LED studio display attached to 3.2 GHz Mac Pro running OS X Mavericks. The display and Mac are about two years old and have worked flawlessly until recently. The display has started to intermittently flicker and then shortly thereafter (usually between 5 and 60 minutes) will go totally black. Unplugging the power cord and reconnecting gets it going again but it will eventually go black and the frequency this happens is increasing, indicating that the problem is getting worse. A few other points:
- The Mac is fine. I can plug a different monitor in and the picture is fine.
- There are no unusual noises or buzzes. The display is very quiet.
- If playing music, the internal speakers keep working even after the screen goes black.
- I have the Mac and display plugged into a run-of-the-mill surge protector strip. I tried changing strips but that did not help.
- I tried unplugging the USB connection from the display to computer. That didn't help.
- I don't use output power cord to charge a notebook or anything else. It just hangs there.
There have been a couple other discussion threads on this topic over the last few years so I know it is not an isolated problem, however I have seen nothing official from Apple and no clear solutions from others. Some have discussed replacing the power supply, some have suggested replacing the logic board and I also saw the suggestion to purchase a pure sine wave UPS system with the thought that these displays are very sensitive to dirty power. Unfortunately this is all anecdotal and I don't know what the explanation is. It's a beautiful monitor and I really don't want it to turn into a $1000 brick.
Does anybody have any insight into the nature and root cause of this issue or any solutions that have been clearly demonstrated to solve the problem? At this point I'm thinking of buying a decent UPS because I figure it's probably not a bad idea to provide clean power to the system anyway.
Thanks!
