Open the Mac App Store and download Yosemite, or if desired, order a download code for Lion 10.7 or Mountain Lion 10.8 from the online Apple Store.

Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

If you want to go all the way to Yosemite (10.10), you can download it for free from the Mac App Store.

The only way to upgrade Safari is to upgrade the Mac OS X itself. For a user with 10.6.8 that would mean moving up to Lion ($20) or Mountain Lion ($20) or Yosemite (Free). Those upgrades do not have to be done in sequence, one can go directly to Yosemite.

Biggest issues for people are applications that are written to be compatible with the older PPC legacy systems and relied upon Rosetta for operation. Rosetta has not been a part of Mac OS X since 10.6.8.
