iPhone (4s with 8.4.1) calendar will not sync with one on MacBook Pro (10.9.5)

Up until very recently my iPhone calendar and the one on my Mac Book Pro would sync locally (using a USB cable) and seamlessly via iTunes. I know that when Maverick was first released that was not possible, but it has been for a relatively long time. As of about 4 days ago the one on my MacBook Pro shows ONLY US Holidays, none of my own appointments and entries. I do not want to use iCloud.
