Lack of real help

So i have been a "mac" owner since early 2007.

I purchased a iMac 27" duo core in late 2009. Just recently I think i lost it. I'm getting purple vertical lines on boot up with what looks like two instances of progress barone in middle center and one left bottom, and after the loading bar completes it just goes to a grey white solid screen.

I have researched everything i can to try and in home repair.

i have yet to find one single remedy for this. No one not even the apple "geniuses" seem to know anything. Shocking i know....

So if anyone out there knows what to do to fix this without the replacing the HDD i urge you to help me.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

They told you this after running their free diagnostic tests and/or attempted repairs?

I don't have an Apple store where I live. The closest one is about 185 miles north.

What I have done... SMC reset, PRAM reset, Pulled out RAM sticks double check there is no damage to them.

Most internet research I have found entails PRAM which isn't always a good thing to do.

One macforums post suggested I reinstall OS. I can't even get into safe mode. I was thinking it was my GPU but haven't had the time nor the tools to open up my iMac. I was hoping some one out there has had this issue and fixed or has dealt with it.

I just need to see the screen for 5 minutes to get 4 files off. the last day it was working it didn't back up to my iCloud. :-(
