iOS iMovie Storage Nightmare

We shot a birthday party on the iPad mini. iOS 8.4. Multiple clips. \

We then made a project in iMovie on the iPad and worked for hours cutting and splicing.

The movie is a bit less than 30 mins.

Now we try to export the movie. "Not enough storage". What is taking the space? The movie clips. If we try to make space by moving the clips, then the imovie project can't see them.

I've tried airdrop and itunes but it seems just to render the movie we must have the free space on the iPad.

Cannot believe we were not somehow warned before wasting time, but maybe there is still a way to use iCloud drive as the place were the videos live?
