My trackpad is not working

I own a MacBook Pro and the trackpad does not work - I feel like it's a software issue but not sure. My entire OS has run pretty slow these past couple months. I have heard that it might be a battery issue but I don't want to go into the Genius bar if they are going to charge me. Bought it back in 2011.

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated 🙂
