reset my macbook now can't access iPhone in itunes

I recently reset my macbook to factory settings and now when i connect my iPhone i can't add or remove any content in iTunes. The iphone is recognised and i was able to back it up in iTunes but still can't actually access it (i.e when i right click on a playlist there is no option to delete).
