How do I swap out an old Airport Express for a new one?

I am trying to replace my very old Airport Express with a new one (802.11n). I tried setting it up with AirPort Utility, but without success. I can't get past the flashing amber light. In what order do I disconnect the old Express and connect the new one? How can I use the "replace an existing base station" option if both the old and the new Express are not plugged in at the same time? TIA for any help.

AirPort Express Base Station, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

If you used Airport Utility for looking/programming the units: remove the old Airport Express, install the new one, start AirportUtility, go to the new AE and it will ask you if it should set the old settings in the new AE.
