Just got off the phone with Tmobile regarding unlocking (or verifying it is unlocked) my iPhone. They said that because I bought it through Apple I had to go to an Apple store to get it unlocked. Somehow that sounds wrong. Anyone recently unlocked a T-Mobile, Apple store purchased, iPhone 6 plus? What was your process?

Since you bought it with a t-mobile abo, the price was subsidized by t-mobile. If you want an unlocked iPhone the price would have been higher. So indeed you have to go to Apple now how to solve this financially, then with their help they will ask t-mobile and unlock.
The iPhone 6 for Tmobile at the Apple store is not subsidized. And it actually shows 'unlocked' on the Apple store site.
Well, you may be right, perhaps the iphones are now sold unlocked. then there will be no financial arrangement necessary. but why not go and ask where you bought it.
and if it is unlocked, you just can use it with another provider' sim card, try that. Whether you get out of the t-mobile contract is the question then, which you have to solve with them.

I think Apple is not able to unlock the phone since it falls into carrier duty. I would assume, that Apple would advise you something or just contact carrier themselves . None can unlock the phone but carrier.
OK, so just finished online chat with Apple. They confirm that our phones are carrier unlocked, and were purchased that way. That explains why T-Mobile was unable to do it. Now we are ready to sell them and buy the new one! :-)
