I have a lot of game apps and not enough storage for them on my iPhone 6 Plus. So my question is what external storage devices are out there that one can launch games from and save progress on - is that even possible? I am open to apple and non-apple product recommendations.

Really? I mean one can use icloud and external devices to store photos and videos on but to store an App on is not possible in any way?
Yes really. Apps and their associated files can only be stored on the phone. It is one of the many reasons there are no malwares for the iPhone.
