I have been trying to perform a soft reset to clean out some fuzz and all my air2 does is take a screen shot. I have been holding the power and home buttons just like on my phone but it is treating it like I'm letting go. What could be wrong?

What do you mean by clean out some fuzz?
Pressing both the power and home buttons at the same time and holding both should bring up the apple logo after about 10-40 seconds unless there is a fault in one of the switches and it is self-releasing. In that case you might want to visit an Apple store genius bar and have the techs check it out to see if you have a bad switch.
There might not be anything wrong at all. Just try pressing both buttons at precisely the same time and hold down until you see the Apple logo. If it continues to fail for you, restart your iPad using the power button and the slider bar, then try the reset again,
My pad's been a little slow recently and a few apps have been crashing. Usually restarting clears the cache and revitalizes things.

I assume "clearing out the cobwebs" so to speak.
Then, double click the home button, and swipe the content that sits above each icon up and off the top of the screen. After doing that with each app, try the reboot again, and as Demo points out, try to be accurate in pressing both buttons simultaneously.
Thanks for the reply. Turns out it was my Otterbox cover preventing the right kind of contact on the power button. Ridiculous!
I Have an Otterbox Defender Cover on my iPad Air 2 and it is quite easy to perform a reset, however, you might be using a different Otterbox case. In any event, I'm glad that you got it all sorted out.
You are not the first user to have had issues with the Otterbox cover - good that the problem is only the cover and not the iPad itself.
