Why do I get "Customize Toolbar" pop-up when I click "back" arrow?

Sometimes Safari almost seems to freeze, so that nothing I want happens when I click anywhere on a page. A frequent example is getting "Customize Toolbar" when I click on the Back arrow. After a while it clears up and works correctly. I have OS X 10.10.4 on a Mac mini.

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Are you sure the issue is with Safari only?

It is possible that the mouse/ trackpad is sending a right click instead of a left click. Examine any Trackpad or mouse settings in System Preferences that can cause you to right click accidentally. Also try another pointing device if you have one & check/ replace any batteries on the mice/ trackpads.

P.S 10.10.5 has been released, you could try an update for what it is worth. You may want to delete your profile signature, it is never kept up to date & simply confuses things.

Go step by step and test.

1. Empty Caches

Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.

Turn on those extensions one by one and test.

3. Delete com.apple.Safari.plist file and test.

Empty the Trash.

Quit all applications.

Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Select "Library" from the drop down.

Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist

Right click on it and select "Move it to Trash".

Restart. Relaunch Safari.

If this doesn’t help, “Put Back” the com.apple.Safari.plist.

Right click on the Trash icon in the Dock and select “Open”.

Right click on the com.apple.Safari.plist and select “Put Back”.
