Apple Lightning to HDMI Cable stopped working after upgrade to OS 8

I have a Lightning to HDMI cable, purchased from the Apple store that was working just fine until I updated to the latest OS 8. Now I get no signal on my TV and it pops a warning saying that my cable is not 'authorized' -- I spent $49.99 on this cable at the Apple Store in Honolulu 3 years ago... it has always worked until last week. Is this an iOS bug? Or is apple really not supporting their own products?
