Does Apple Mail backup non-iCloud emails to iCloud if used with multiple email accounts

I use Apple Mail on MacOSX to manage multiple email accounts. I want to create and use an iCloud email account but I do NOT want to use any other iCloud features and I do NOT want emails sent/received from non-Apple email accounts to be backed up to iCloud.

Please can someone confirm whether Mail ONLY backs up email sent/received through the iCloud account to iCloud and not email from other accounts?

Also please can someone confirm that with only Mail activated in iCloud that no apps with back up data to iCloud (TextEdit for example)?

None of your mail is backed up, regardless of whether it's iCloud mail or gmail. In both cases mail is synced with the server and will sync back to your device if you restore it at any time (providing you don't actually delete the mail from the device) this is what IMAP mail does, it is nothing to do with back ups.

iCloud only backs up your iCloud account.

If mail is the only activated iCloud sync, other data is not in iCloud.

Thanks for your reply Eric. Just to be 100% clear:

if I have say a gmail account and an iCloud account and I use Apple Mail with iCloud Mail sync on then all messages going through my iCloud email account are backed up, but NOT messages going through the gmail account?

Hi thanks for your reply. I am familiar with how email services work so I am aware of the ability to get mail from the server if it was wiped locally.

However my question was whether iCloud will backup/sync email and if so whether it would do so for all messages in Apple Mail and not just those from an iCloud account which you have answered
