Q: I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro and it randomly shuts down.

Help. I am having problems with my computer randomly shutting off. I thought it was my harddrive as it was making clicking noises so I replaced it,  and restored via time machine (twice) and the problem it still there. I then reformatted the harddrive, installed a clean copy of Yosemite and the problem is still there. Everything seems to be working properly, all of a sudden, the pointer freezes, then the computer shuts down and restarts with a gray window saying that the computer shut down unexpectedly. I reboot the computer and everything works fine till it happens again. This problem has occurred with and without the power cord plugging into my computer.

MacBook Pro 15" late 2011

Yosemite 10.10.5

2.5 GHZ intel core i7

8GB of memory 1333 Mhz DDR3

Intel HD Graphics 3000 512MB

Please help me narrow down the issue.

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

It would appear the your MBP has had kernel panics.  Use these instructions to log and post one:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

    Ciao.

You might also post an Etrecheck report.  It may offer some clues:

    Ciao.

Thank you for the quick replies.

I was finally able to navigate myself to the console and looked through the "System Diagnostic Reports" but was not able to find a panic report. I found several reports starting with "Kernel" but none ending in panic. I even performed a filter search for the word "panic" but nothing.

I will use the internet browser, hopefully it will shut down again soon, and look at the console reports again afterwards.

I apologize in advance as I am not that technically savvy and appreciate everyone's assistance and patience.

My computer just rebooted itself and I was able to get this panic report.

I deleted the "Anonymous UUID". I was not sure what to do with the "Kernel UUID" so I removed it as well.

    Thanks

    Hi Mee37,

Did Apple find a solution for your issue? It seems that i'm suffering from the same problem with my Mac.

    Thanks.
