iPhone 5c automatically turns off when right-side up

My iPhone 5c (8.4.1) automatically shuts off when it is right-side up. To turn it on I turn it upside down--it comes on fine. It also is fine if I set it flat on a table. I have just completely restored the phone using recovery mode: it set up fine, and all of the apps seem to be working well. Any guesses as to the problem? Possibly the gyroscope? Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Hello poly412,

It sounds like your phone will only stay on when it is oriented a certain way. That tells me there is a hardware issue with the device since you've restored it as a new device. You could try force restarting the phone:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

But you will likely need service for your phone:
