Are there any real options, like through Apple, to get a bigger HD installed in my iMac (Mid 2011)?
I have the DVD drive, so would there be room for a 2nd HD, and if so, how to get what I need to avoid the fan problem?

Apple will reinstall the disk that came with the iMac.
Some Apple Store will install a larger drive but you would have to call to find out if they will.
They will not replace the optical drive with a hard drive. For that mod you are on your own.
My suggestion is to get a couple external hard drive. Use one for backup and the other as storage for some of your personal files; such as music, photos and movies. Or anything else that is taking up large amounts of disk space.
