Turn iMac into true external display? (not just Target Display Mode)

Hello,

I have an iMac late 2013 and I got a MacBook Air. I want to use the MacBook Air as my main computer and iMac only as an external display.

Target Display Mode is kind of annoying because it requires the Command + F2 key combo and needs to be repeated every single time my MacBook goes to sleep.

I much prefer how the 'Apple Thunderbolt Display' behaves where it's a 'true' external display, and even allows me to use the additional ports on the display itself.

Rather than pay $1350 for an Apple Display, is there ANYTHING I can do to my iMac to make it act more like a 'true' external display? E.g. I don't mind paying $200 for a special cable/software or something.

Thanks!

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)
