Q: Why did Touch ID stop working to approve family share apps?

Up until 30 minutes ago when a family member want to download an app, it ask for me to approve and enter my fingerprint (Touch ID).  Now something happened and it is asking for me to enter my password.  I don't want to do this on my iPhone every time one of my kids wants a game or app, i need touch ID to work.  I check and it was turned off for app store purchases, so I turned it back on.  If I download an app, my touch ID works.  But I try to approve one of my kids apps and it asks for my password.  How to i get Touch ID back for approving my kids family share app purchases?

Thanks, Dean.

Ugh...iOS updates 9.1 and 9.2 have rolled out since the problem was first discussed and still the touch option of family share approvals has not been re-enabled.  Apple, you are better than this and somewhere up the chain a decision maker should get this problem resolved.  I'm almost to the point of telling my kids no more downloads or purchases because I am so frustrated with having to enter my password every time they make a request.  Please re-enable this feature!

I Know how you feel , I'm pulling my hair out over it , I constantly get requests for apps from my kids , surely someone at at Apple must've used this feature and is now thinking it's an annoyance having to constantly put password in !

On my iPhone 6s I have to manually type in my password whenever my kid asks permission. On my my iPad I just have to use Touch ID. Both are running iOS 9.2 and is setup the same way. It boggles me!

That's interesting, sounds like it's a bug then , I think that " just works" experience with Apple stuff is now long gone

+1 customer that is annoyed.  My iCloud password is 17+ characters long.  I guess I'm going to change it to the bare minimum because my kids request several apps a day.

I'm experiencing the same issue as so many other users. If only Apple support was as good as their designs. I notice this thread started up on September of this year and not a response or acknowledgement from the Cupertino conglomerate. I visited the Apple store here in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Genius only suggestions where to reload the operating system (Which I did do) , and to ensure that Touch ID was enabled for ITunes & App Store purchases (which it was) and the issue still remains. The Genius members further advised that I get in contact with the ITunes team, which no contact information was provided. Touch ID does work to unlock the device,  use Apple Pay and to log onto certain apps, so clearly the Touch ID reader is functioning properly, but when my children request to download a app or even when I download an app, I am not presented with the option to use Touch ID only to enter a password. Obviously this is either a bug issue or a feature deactivated, either way Apple could you please show the consumers of your products a little respect and that once great customer service that won me over and brought me to you products and services and let us know something!!

    PLEASE FIX!!

I am having same issue. Approving purchases of my kids via Touch ID was such a Godsend and I am very frustrated that it has been removed. I suspect the Apple engineers responsible for this do not have children, otherwise they too would be driven crazy by having to reentermtheir password 30 times a day!

surely it must must be a bug it just makes no sense that it's been removed it's supposed to be one of the key features of the iPhone I'm so frustrated and annoyed that something like this doesn't work anymore and if it is a bug why's it taking so long to fix and if it's not a bug how hard would it be to just display a message saying that the feature isn't supported anymore add this together with the annoyances of the music app the photos app and iCloud and I start to wonder why I bother paying so much for a phone .... Just argggghhhh ... Sort it out

You might want to check this page:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201371

This might help you answer your questions about the Touch ID feature and what to do and what might happened.

Thanks for your post and trying to help but, for me all my settings are correct and touch id works fine for everything except for approving family purchases, I don't know what update killed it but it used to work and now doesn't.

    Thanks Chris

I'm the same, Touch ID works great in everything except for approving family purchases where I don't even get the option to use it

Same here. It was working fine on both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2.

I could use Touch ID to approve family requests.

It just happened that I clicked on Cancel just ONCE and from that point on, it always asks for Password now, instead of touch ID.

    Why?

How can I put it back on?

i think you're on to something here. I pressed cancel on my iPhone and ipad and now I have to type in the password multiple times to get it to work with the approval. However, my wife's iphone can still approve with touch. Previously all our devices could work with touch.

so, this is not a disabled feature. It is a bug. And I am pretty appalled that since September no-one from Apple has come on to comment.
