Q: Why did Touch ID stop working to approve family share apps?

Up until 30 minutes ago when a family member want to download an app, it ask for me to approve and enter my fingerprint (Touch ID).  Now something happened and it is asking for me to enter my password.  I don't want to do this on my iPhone every time one of my kids wants a game or app, i need touch ID to work.  I check and it was turned off for app store purchases, so I turned it back on.  If I download an app, my touch ID works.  But I try to approve one of my kids apps and it asks for my password.  How to i get Touch ID back for approving my kids family share app purchases?

Thanks, Dean.

Ok, so is there a way to "reset" the feature so we don't click "Cancel"? Maybe remove the child from the family group then re-add them?

Come on Apple.  I'm in the same boat here.  Fix this issue with approving family requests.  The fingerprint scan was very useful.  Typing my password every time my kids request an app is ridiculous

Another disgruntled customer here. It's pretty lame that Apple won't address this issue considering how many fewer apps are  being downloaded as a result.

More people need to start filling out the Apple feedback form whenever they discover any problems http://www.apple.com/feedback/  How much notice Apple actually take of this is anyone's guess but if more people use it who knows. This problem along with a host of other small frustrating things are becoming a common occurrence.

I have the same problem. I submitted feedback, but wanted to chime in here too. Requiring a password around the kids is a stupid idea and I don't appreciate Apple not calling it a bug or explaining why they removed this critical functionality.

+999. The removal of touch ID has made me use a simpler password than before. I can't be bothered entering 20 char password Several times a day.

+1 more "me too". I have the same problem and  just want to approve family app requests with Touch ID again.

You would think someone who worked high up at Apple would have kids who's purchases need to be approved using Touch ID and be as annoyed about this problem as the rest of us, why does it take so long for them to ever sort anything out ... Unless theyve all started using android phones ! ( just kidding ) it's a bit of a bummer when you've coughed up this sort of money on a phone and a key feature doesn't work , it's also ridiculous that they don't give some sort of acknowledgemeant to the issue .. What a bunch of knob heads.

    chrrissss -

Yours is the best comment yet!

I am having the same issue as well!  I can't believe that someone from Apple support has not come on here at all!

It was so convenient to use the Touch ID for approval of our kids requests for apps...

Not sure why this fix can't be added to an upcoming iOS software update?!!!

Glad to know that there are others out there having the same problem...

    • Come on Apple, fix this!!!
    • or at least chime in & comment!
    • it worked before & can work again!

I had this situation arise in the last few weeks. My daughter requested an app, so I used Touch ID.

She then requested another and suddenly I had to use my iCloud password - and ever since a password seems the only option.

I've used Apple products since 1989 and have long been disappointed by the company's inability to 'do' customer support, but it's become so much worse in recent years. When you get issues such as this - and the fact that it's own native email client doesn't work, which I've recently given up on, such is the paucity of knowledgeable support - it does dent your faith in a tech company.

Come on Apple: wake up and remember that you're only as good as your customer support. Which means you're a pretty crappy company at the moment.

It's almost as if they don't want us to use family sharing after all

I feel your pain. It's worth mentioning (to everyone here) that Apple prides themselves on saying they don't monitor these threads. If you *really* want change, you need to provide feedback at their 'official' means. This is more of a community supported forum. That being said, I would bet money they browse these forums and check out the lengthier posts, but the feedback link is here:

I second your comment about Apple Mail. I now spend $10 a month to subscribe to Office 365 so I can use Microsoft Outlook. I really do prefer Mail, but it continues to be unreliable and buggy. Shoot, it's been so long since I used Mail that I don't even remember why it s u c k s. I know I tried it when El Capitan came out, but quickly got fed up and switched to Outlook. It works great, looks good. I would caution, though, that it doesn't seem to search all of your emails, like Mail did.

It's also worth checking out Windows 10. I use it in Boot Camp now, and it's come a long way. I love OSX and have used it for 15 years, but since Jobs passed away they have lost focus. Windows is looking better all the time. Especially considering many of us spend the majority of our time in a browser.

    Good luck!

Phil Schiller is in charge of the App Store now so just email him about it directly schiller@apple.com.
