Q: AFP/SMB Permissions Not Working

Hi,

I'm trying to set up shares on my drive. Let's say I have User A and User B. Under Sharing, I have File Sharing turned on and I've added a folder Home Movies. On the right, when I have Home Movies selected, I add User A and set to Read Only. I also set Everyone to No Access. However, when I access my share as User B, I still see and can read the files in Home Movies.

I would have thought that if a user is not listed, then they won't have access to the folder. However, that is not being respected or I do not have an accurate understanding of how these permission works.

I have also tried to add User B to Home Movies but I do not see the "No Access" option. Setting it to "Write Only (Drop box)" seems to be respected for a bit and then full access is resumed after some time.

The default permissions on the folder you created likely has the Staff group as read. All users are members of the Staff group.

The everyone permission is actually all users who are not the owner and not in the same group as the file/folder. It doesn't set no access for all users you didn't add to the access list.

Thanks. I figured it out. I was sharing an external hard drive, there seems to be a setting against the external drive that says "Ignore ownership on this volume". Once I unchecked that, I was able to change group permissions for the folders within and now it appears to be working properly.
