Time Machine not backing up

Time machine acting wonky. It would not backup saying I had 55 gig left and needed 72. I thought it would delete older backups to free up space. I have a mid 2010 iMac running Mavericks using a Newer Tech mini stack V3 750 gig for backup. I have it partitioned to give 501 gig to the iMac which has a 500 gig HD. I erased my external and reformatted. It is backing up now telling me "Backing up: 75 GB of 523.43 GB. It has a 500 GB HD. What the heck is happening. I guess I will see in about 5 hours. I backed up my wife's MacBook Pro earlier with no problems. You guys think my iMac has a problem?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Not sure if this will help you out or not,

Are those old backups that you improperly tried to delete still in your Mac's trash...?

if so, see > http://pondini.org/TM/12.html

How did you erase and reformat your Time Machine backup drive...?

for help, see > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU.html

Are you using the same backup drive for both computers...?

For the full FAOs, see > http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

I used disk utility to erase and reformat. I have a partition on the external for two computers. Everything seems fine now although I lost old backups.

Yup' reformatting does tent to do that.

The MacBook Pro partition will be used to transfer iTunes and Photos to a new MacBook Pro before the old one is sold. Thank you.

You can do that in several ways. I prefer using either a CarbonCopyClone or a hard wired FireWire/Thunderbolt connection over using Time Machine.
