I am trying to upgrade my dad's iPod Touch 4 generation with ios 4.1 one upgrade higher. I see the options for the ios 6.1.6 upgrade, but I don't need that. I need ios 4.2. Is there anyway to still upgrade to that?
The reason is that I can't fit the whole 6.1.6 upgrade onto the iPod.

No. When you restore or update an iOS device apple requires you to go to the latest iOS version compatible with the specific model iPod. In your cast that is iOS 6.1.6. Apple does this by when you restore/update Apple only signs the latest version and signing is checked by iTunes before the retore/update
