Final Cut Pro 10.2 INCREDIBLY SLOW R3D Files Please Help???

I have an IMAC 5K with 4GZ Intel I7, 32gig Ram, AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB, running Yosemite.

I just recently bought FCP X, 10.2 and I am trying to set up a project from a Thunderbolt Drobo 5D Array drive. After I imported the footage, RAW R3D files, which took hours, not even transcoding, every time I even select a clip or scroll in the browser I get a color wheel. Once I finally select a clip, it plays fine without skipping however any other command or action I try to perform the color wheel pops up and it takes up to 10 minutes for it to go away.'

My computer is brand new, I have nothing stored on it's 1TB drive other than a few programs. The External Thunderbolt drive has over 13 TB of free space on it. I can't possibly understand why it is not working properly. PLEASE HELP.
