Stolen iPhone now recovered but id locked

I purchased an iPhone 4 in June 2013. The device got stolen on 3rd May 2015. I filled FIR with law enforcement. Fortunately today, ie 4 months later they recovered the device and handed me back. But i can't restore it to factory defaults, since the thief have used a different apple id and it asks for password to that id before resetting the device. I have all original documents relating to purchase and the phone was purchased in my name. Kindly help!

Take the documents showing you are the original purchaser and the iPhone to

the nearest Apple store where they may assist you.

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar to avoid delay.

Thanks for the reply friend! Hope what you suggest works, but still curious to know, can apple not assist me on this. In case, it so happens i may be left with expensive paper weight.... 😟

We are Apple users here. You ask what might happen if Apple cannot assist. Take your iPhone to Apple instead of asking for our speculation on what might happen if your efforts at Apple fail.
