The green light indicating camera is on lights up intermittently. Not visibly running anything that would cause that. Any ideas?

Make yourself an iPatch.
Take 4 x 8 inch piece of aluminum foil.
Fold in a 1 x 4 inch strip.
Fold over edge of iMac so that it covers lens and light.
Problem solved.

Have you installed any kind of theft-recovery software? If not, does anyone else have access to the machine?
No, but your suggestion got me looking, My weather station monitoring software has a Webcam option that automatically, for some reason, accesses my monitor and polls it every so often. I disabled it and it stopped turning on. Problem solved. Thanks.
Others with the same problem might want to know the name of that software.
