Confused over iphone backup

Just need some clarity here, when i backup my iPhone, do the photos duplicate themselves if i don't delete them from the phone after each backup as i can't understand why i am getting duplicates of the same photo / video. Am i right in thinking the cloud will act as the central repository for the original data/ photos and video s?

Where does the music get stored?

Thanks of any help you can give on this as my phone is just about out of space and i desperately need to free this up.

iCloud backups don't include:

Data that's already stored in the cloud, like contacts, calendars, notes, My Photo Stream, and iCloud Photo Library

An iTunes backup doesn't include:

Photos already stored in the cloud, like My Photo Stream, and iCloud Photo Library
