Greetings jmh8,

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It appears that pressing the volume control keys on your MacBook keyboard have different functions after updating to OS X Yosemite.

Most likely the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" setting has been enabled, and F11 and F12 are triggering Mission Control features. You can disable (un-check) this setting by going to Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard.

For more information on these features, see How to change the behavior of function keys on your Mac and OS X Yosemite: Mission Control preferences.

Happy Computing.
