I would like to search iOS 8 Contacts on my new iPad Air 2 for keywords in any field, including Notes. I've been surprised at how limited the search function is compared to Yosemite's Contacts search abilities. Am I missing something or is it really as limited as it seems?

I thought this was possible, and I just tried a search on my iPhone in Contacts, using the search bar there and was able to retrieve contacts using a search of something I had in the notes field. I'm going to go upstairs and try my iPad and see what happens. I'll be back.
EDIT: Just did a test on my iPad and using a couple of different criteria, I was able to get it to search any and all fields, including name, phone number, address and notes. What are you syncing your contacts with? Have you attempted to search for a contact that you know exists with something in notes and match it exactly? And it is not being found?
Yes, I searched for my daughter's name, which appears in multiple listings, but the main one didn't even show up. Then I searched for "passport" which appears in the notes for my own listing, and it didn't show up. Weird.
Quite. I'm guessing that you have verified the content is still in the notes field? Other than that, I'm not sure. I sync my contacts with Outlook 2013 on a Windows computer. When you say your daughter's main one did not appear, are you referring to her contact card, and it doesn't even find that? Are you searching from Spotlight, or from within the Contacts App? If Spotlight, do you have Contacts selected in Settings>General>Spotlight Search?
I Should have been more precise . Her "main" one is within my own. Her name is in the Company field. And the word, passport, appears twice in the notes and it isn't returned in a search. Also I tried a string of numbers within the passport number, also within the notes and that didn't show up either. I'm using the Contacts' search field.
The only thing I can recommend at this time is a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. It will not affect your data, but may release whatever seems to be holding this up. As I said, I've been able to use the Contacts app and search partial names, partial number sequences in all fields of Contacts, including Notes and not experience any issues. Good luck.
