    Ann,

I suggest that you call AT&T first to verify that it has indeed unlocked your phone from their end and then proceed to follow Apple's instructions for a Restore but instead of restoring From Backup, try setting it up as New. Try it this way and please report back. Good luck.

Edit: Looks like while I was typing the above you indicated that you had solved your issue. Would you please post back and let us know if you were able to Restore from Backup or had to set it up as New? Thanks.

Wait 24 hours as it suggests in the email then make a backup of your phone and after that Restore your iPhone in iTunes as a NEW iPhone (not from backup). You should get the message, "Congratulations, your iPhone is unlocked." After that you can restore from your backup.

HI, Thankyou for your help in unlocking my phone,

I didn't realise I needed to ask AT&T they ask a load of questions

and then send an instruction sheet, but it's just what support tell you to do,

it doesn't work, I was reading over what people had answered here and

there were bits from you and deggie that made sence and were not in

the instructions from support or AT&T

SO ... Wait for 24 hours then

Its plug into iTunes and backup

    and restore to Factory settings,

    easy when you know how

    or get the right information.

Hi Mary, it's not hard when you get the right information

Email AT&T they give you an unlock request number.

They say they will inform you in 24 hours if they will unlock your phone,

They got back to me the same day with instructions,

They missed out ... Wait for 24 hours! And restore to factory settings.

So .... Wait for 24 hours

Connect to ITunes and backup and restore

    But restore to factory settings

It took a while to restore but it was lovely to see that message

Your phone has been unlocked,      good luck xx

Hi Ann, thank you for your feedback and thank you for your kind words, they are appreciated, but it was really Deggie who provided the key information, to first restore as new and then restore from backup, if desired, after one has received the message that the phone is unlocked.

I am very glad that you got it unlocked, enjoy...

The Apple instructions have been incorrect for some time.....   I've sent feedback on this more than once suggesting they change the wording..... This does happen sometimes with Apple's instructions. As the Terms of Use here require it is best to try it first before posting.

For whatever they are worth I offer the following comments.

I have re-read the Apple instructions again and agree that they should be revised. IMO they are not technically incorrect per se but they are misleading. The current version states under the section "Unlock your iPhone":

    1. Back up your iPhone.

    2. When you have a backup, erase your iPhone.

Would be clearer if that sentence said:  "When you have a backup, restore your iPhone using iTunes and when prompted, set the iPhone as New, not From backup." Apple may believe that the wording "erase your iPhone" is analogous to "set up as New" but this is not clear to all.

    3. Restore your iPhone from the backup you just made.

Would be clearer if that sentence said:  "After you receive a message that your iPhone is unlocked you can restore your iPhone from the backup you just made."

Likewise the current version states under the section "Get help":

    1. Restore your iPhone to factory settings.

As above, revising to include "setting the iPhone as New" would be preferable IMO than "Restore to factory settings" (even thought the two are synonymous).

    2. Contact your carrier to make sure that the unlock was applied in your carrier's system.

    3. Restore your iPhone from a backup.

As above, revising to "After you receive a message......." would be preferable here as well.

You mentioned that you have sent feedback to Apple more than once suggesting a change of wording. Would it be worth it to try again ???

Regarding the Terms of Use, I do not want to get into semantics here but the wording they use is not "require", it is "when possible". I have tested most of my suggestions when possible. I am not willing to drop my phone into my pool in order to advise an OP that placing the phone in a bag of rice could help, or similarly, I am not willing to click on a phishing webpage and enter my credit card in order to advise an OP that they should contact their cc issuer and clear their Safari history and data. I also do not test Apple's Approved Publications, it is the job of their engineers to do so.

Thank you for your help in clarifying this procedure, as I mentioned to the OP on my previous post, it was you who solved her issue.

I really like your suggested changes and it can't hurt to send them in and might help.

I am rather disappointed in your lack of commitment here. The least you could do would be to drop your iPhone in a toilet. And when it is replaced drop your iPhone from 2 feet on shag carpet and shatter the screen.. Plus test all of Apple's publications before you joined here.

I am sorry to disappoint you, I actually thought about the toilet test but being the slacker that I am, I decided that sticking my hand into the pool was far more preferable. Likewise, I also considered testing all Apple publications, present, past, and future (I am clairvoyant in case you did not know) but concluded, most probably out of laziness, that I would not have enough years on Earth to do so. I know I have let you down

The suggested changes were your ideas, not mine, all I did is put some potential words into them. You could send them to Apple if you like or alternatively, I could do so while acknowledging you as the source of the "substance". I have a contact in Apple's Executive Liaison group in Austin and I could email him, don't know of any other way to reach the brass. Do you as a Level 9? Emailing Tim Cook routs my remit to the Austin group (not that I thought for a second that Mr. Cook would get it himself).

Personally, i have dropped an iPhone in the toilet but I have been completely unsuccessful in dropping in on a shag carpet and shattering it. Possibly as I have been unable to locate a shag carpet.
