I don't have an i-device so I don't know if there is a difference between an alarm tone and a ringtone.

thanks, this didn't do it. In the newest version of iTunes, you don't have to go to all that trouble to make an ACC file. However, once I made one, the ACC file on my mbp and am trying to get it on my phone. I've tried dragging it in iTunes with it connected via usb. I've also tried syncing with wifi. Can't get it to show up on iPhone.

You cannot just use the AAC version for the ringtone/alarm tone. You have to change the file extension from m4a to m4r. Then you should be able to get it into iTunes. You will, however have to delete the m4a file if you make a copy of it. On my Windows computer, once I change the file extension, all I have to do is double-click on the file to get it to play and then add it automatically to the Tones folder to be used.
